Academic and Social/ Emotional Support:

Middle school can be difficult for students for a wide variety of reasons.  A new environment combined with rapid physical and emotional development, complex social situations, and new academic challenges can create a scenario that even well-adjusted adults may struggle to navigate.  We offer many different academic, social, and emotional supports for students as they move through the challenging middle years.  Here are a few examples:

  • School Counselor, Lauren Johnson – Individual student counseling, classroom social/ emotional skill lessons, academic intervention, and MUCH more! 257-5543 or johnson@acusd.org
  • Nexus – Project Success, Aggression Replacement Training (ART), XY Program
  • Homeroom – dedicated time for student connection and social/emotional learning
  • CHAMPS model of classroom management – focused on clear, consistent expectations, student-teacher relationship development, progressive and fair discipline, and respectful communication
  • WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) – Student leaders reaching out to make all students feel welcome
  • Math and English Edgenuity classes for academic intervention
  • English Strategic Support classes for targeted students
  • Peer Tutoring Class – Students supporting students academically
  • Planner stamps – every class, every day to ensure student organization and parent communication

These are just a few examples of the programs, classes, and people we have available to support students during this critical time of learning and development.  Please contact Mr. Modesti at richard.modesti@acusd.org or Mr. Gardner at andrew.gardner@acusd.org with additional questions or to see how your student can access any of these specific supports.

AVID Certification Year:

As you may be aware, Ione Junior High adopted the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program during the 2017-2018 school year in order to continue to improve career and college readiness for all students.  The program is internationally recognized as one of the most effective college readiness programs in the world.  We currently have over 65 students enrolled in the year-long AVID elective, and more than 45 students taking a semester-long AVID Lite course.  Additionally, we are using several AVID-aligned school-wide practices such as tutorial for all students, common organizational tools, and AVID instructional strategies in every classroom.  We are working diligently to ensure that we complete the rigorous AVID certification process this school year so that we are officially recognized by AVID as a qualified school site.  If you would like to know more about AVID, please contact our AVID site coordinator, Tara Hannah, at 257-5531 or thannah@acusd.org

Professional Learning and Growth:

The professionals at Ione Junior High are constantly striving to improve our practice for the benefit of students.  Our professional development plan includes:

  • AVID and CHAMPS instructional strategies shared at each staff meeting
  • Five minimum days dedicated to teacher collaboration, training, and professional development on student-focused best practices
  • A mathematics Professional Learning Community (PLC) dedicated to improving math instruction
  • Content-area and Grade-level teams focused on cultural and academic growth

We want to ensure that we are providing the best possible learning experience for all students that attend Ione Junior High.  We are dedicated to professional growth for the purpose of creating a positive, rigorous, and safe learning environment.
